Keep selling during load-shedding: how an offline POS works
What happens to bills, stock and payments when the power or internet goes, and how to measure what outages really cost you.
· 2 min read
When the power cuts out, a cloud-only POS stops — and customers walk away. An offline-first POS keeps the counter running.
Bills are saved on the device first
Every sale is stored on the till before it is sent. If the network drops, nothing is lost; the bill prints and the customer leaves.
Sync when the network returns
As soon as the connection is back, waiting bills go to the server in order. Duplicate sending is impossible because every bill has its own id.
The open bill survives a crash
If the till switches off in the middle of a bill, the items are still there when it starts again.
Run on a UPS or battery tablet
A small UPS for the printer and router, or an Android POS terminal with a battery, covers most cuts.
Measure what outages cost
Biznso compares sales during each cut with a normal hour and shows the money lost to load-shedding each month — useful when deciding on a generator or IPS.
Works on 2G
Screens load small data and retry quietly, so even weak mobile data is enough for syncing.
